Cornwall, England is home to the Cornish pasty: a hearty, hand-held pastry filled with meat, potatoes, and vegetables. It was the meal of choice for miners, who needed something warm, portable, and sustaining underground. The crimped edge served as a built-in handle, making it as practical as it was comforting.

The Upper Peninsula Connection

In the 19th century, Cornish miners brought their beloved pasty across the Atlantic to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. There, it became more than just food — it became tradition. Pasties fueled hardworking families and grew into a regional tradition still cherished today. For many who grew up in the U.P., the smell of a pasty brings back memories of family kitchens, small-town bakeries, and the comfort of something simple and real.

Bringing the Story Home to Minneapolis

After more than 20 years in Minneapolis, we’re proud to carry this tradition forward. Proper Pasties Mpls is about honoring those Cornish and U.P. roots while creating something new for the Twin Cities community. We use local ingredients, bake from scratch, and stay true to the original spirit: food that warms, comforts, and connects.

Why Pasties, Why Now
